Whether gold, silver or bronze, nothing says “Glamour” or “Luxe” quite like metallics.
They work beautifully in the autumn/winter when teamed with rich plummy tones; and in the summer they can come off ethereal and shimmery – like a mermaid (in a good way!). It’s no wonder that metallics are a fashion staple.
The Autumn/Winter 2015 catwalks were awash with metallics. Rodarte lead the way with a selection of shimmering gowns; fringed hems; and plunging necklines which gave off a, 70’s Disco meets 80’s Dynasty vibe. Balenciaga showed lady-like heritage inspired skirts and jackets served up with a side of metallic shimmer – however this collection was far from traditional as reportedly some of the embellishments were actually razor blades! (not recommended!). A designer that really caused a buzz and had everyone declaring their love for 80’s Luxe was Jonathan Anderson for Loewe. Here rich jewel toned metallics were teamed with leathers and simple trousers – a look that will no doubt be recreated in “real-life” come October/November this year.
Celebrities (and Royalty) know the “wow factor” that comes with a metallic dress. Chrissy Teigen stunned in a skin- tight plunging Johanna Johnson gown to the 56th annual Grammy awards. Jaws dropped when Kate Middleton made her, “post baby Prince George” debut in 2013 in a sequinned shimmering Jenny Packham dress and Taylor Swift wowed in gold lame Gucci Premiere.
Metallic dresses and details can work beautifully for bridesmaids providing a, “bit of bling’ without being over the top. We love this ChiChi London prom dress in pale pink with metallic thread running through it to provide just a touch of the trend (similar here). Needle & Thread always have beautiful embellished dresses and this full length tulle gown with ombre pink skirt and silver metallic detailing is very special indeed (at less than £500, this could even be a perfect wedding dress for a bride on a smaller budget or as a reception dress). Or if you want to go all out how about this pleated Alice + Olivia bronze maxi dress? The first port of call for Brides wanting to embrace metallics on their big day will likely be Jenny Packham (well, if she’s good enough for Kate…) Famed for her floaty fabrics; lace; embellishments and use of sheer layers, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream features a number of gowns with metallic accents that will certainly dazzle.
If intricate beading, decadent embellishments and romantic tulles are your thing (they’re certainly ours!), Australian-based Anna Campbell always delivers. With some of the most beautiful embellishments we’ve seen – it’s no wonder the dresses are pinned; shared and loved so much on Pinterest! Gemy Maalouf’s 2016 collection features a metallic, glittering close fitted gown with an amazing neck piece – no need to buy additional statement jewellery! Lusan Mandongus feature a simple an elegant embellished dress within their latest collection. Or for Brides who want an alternative to a wedding dress (but still want to feel like a Bride) this midi dress from Preen by Thornton Bregazzi may just tick the box. This floaty number is patterned with florals which delicately shimmer in the light – just a hint of metallic.
