We mentioned in this post that yellow became the surprise colour on the red carpet at the 2017 Golden Globe awards. In a sea of black, pinks and metallics; Natalie Portman, Emily Ratajkowski, Maisie Williams, Reese Witherspoon and Viola Davis all stood out and proved that no matter your skin tone or hair colour anyone REALLY can wear yellow.
And with Emma Stone wearing a pretty patterned yellow tea dress in the much buzzed about La La Land, we predict an increase in the number of women showing an interest in this, (usually a little overlooked) colour.
As our ‘Yellow Wedding’ Pinterest board proves, yellow is a fabulous choice for a wedding colour scheme. There’s so many shades from soft buttercream to bright chartreuse and can be incorporated easily through floral arrangements, decor, even the wedding dress!
In Whisper & Blush style, we have pulled together our edit of yellow dresses and accessories to rock at a wedding for the bride, bridesmaids and wedding guests. We’ve even thrown in some looks that would look fab on your honeymoon or as wear again accessories.
This exquisite yellow silk and sequinned flowers strapless gown from Oscar de la Renta would certainly make a bold bridal statement. While yellow is traditionally viewed as a summer colour, we think that if teamed with a black tulle veil or black hair accessories, this could work just as well in the winter. It certainly would be a twist on the traditional!
Zac Posen is certainly a red carpet favourite, and it’s no surprise given how beautiful and figure flattering the designs are. This corset gown would be a great choice for a bride looking for a mermaid/fishtail style wedding dress.
3D Florals and embellished dresses continue to be a popular choice for brides and this Marchesa Notte A-line ball gown certainly taps into this trend with its embroidered bodice and beading. This is a stunning wedding dress for a summer do.
Online favourite ASOS has a great selection of yellow bridesmaid dresses as part of their wedding collection at very accessible price points.
Needle and Thread (via ASOS) are renowned for their embellished occasion dresses and this yellow maxi dress with tulle skirt would look so beautiful as a bridesmaids dress teamed with white and pink blooms.
This midi dress with sweetheart neckline and boned bodice is oh-so-flattering and stunning in its simplicity.
Available in a midi-style too so you can mix and match, we love this pretty floral printed yellow bridesmaid dress. Don’t feel like you just need to mix and match on the dress lengths – why not have some bridesmaids in patterned dresses and some in plain?
The Wedding Guest…
If you’re going to a spring/summer wedding then yellow could be the perfect colour option for you. I personally love to wear yellow (it’s my favourite colour) and as it’s not the most popular of colours – you’ll always stand out in a crowd. I seriously have my eye on this number by French Connection. The vintage-style tea dress with a beautiful delicate chantilly lace trim and deep V neck is just so pretty. And those sleeves!…
This is probably one of the brightest shades we’ve featured so far and would certainly look better on deeper skin tones (or make sure to build up some fake tan for a few days ahead of wearing it!) The ladder trim gives this skater dress from ASOS a modern feel.
If you don’t want head-to-toe yellow then how about this gorgeous number by Ariella? The Gigi bandeau jacquard dress is stunning with its full skirt and black bodice. We love this.
Like the idea of yellow but just want a hint of it? Then how about your accessories?
I have a bit of a thing for the Gucci GG Marmont bags and haven’t seen it in yellow before. The shoulder bag has a softly structured shape and an oversized flap closure with Double G hardware. The sliding chain strap can be worn multiple ways, changing between a shoulder and a top handle bag. It certainly would be a talking point and add a pop of colour to any outfit – dressy or casual.
If statement accessories are your thing then check out these Chiara Ferragni yellow court shoes. These would look equally as good with ankle grazing jeans and a t-shirt as they would dressed up for an occasion.
Currently in the sale, this pretty lemon dress by Sister Jane would look fab teamed with some flat sandals and a big floppy hat for a day of sightseeing . We love the daisy crochet hemline and sleeves.
How about a yellow swimsuit? Perfect for making the most of your tan. Norma Kamali’s ‘XO Bill Mio’ swimsuit is inspired by the glamorous femme fatales of the ’50s. Designed in a bikini-like silhouette, this one-piece is made from a smooth bright-yellow fabric that has a figure-sculpting quality. It’s quite expensive in swimsuit terms but it is super flattering and would be a lovely treat. We love how the cutout finish reveals just the right amount of skin while still offering a good level of coverage.
It’s always a good idea to pack a beach dress to throw over your swimwear to take you from sun lounger to lunch. We love this tiered lace sundress from ASOS.
TOP TIPS ON WEARING YELLOW
- If you’re scared of yellow, then just go for one accessory that can add a real pop of colour to your outfit.
- If head-to-toe yellow is too much, then perhaps think about teaming a yellow skirt or trousers with a plain top.
- Pale skin can wear yellow, just opt for paler pastel tones rather than the acid brights
- Have fun with it! Yellow is a happy colour, so let it bring out your fun side!
